The elegant Hotel Carlos V has fine accommodations a block off the popular Plaza de Zocodover, but just around the corner, in the back, is the reason I mention it. Facing the front of the hotel, follow the Calle Juan Labrador that runs along it to the left. Alittle way down on the right you’ll see a nondescript sign for a Pension and an old wooden door leading into it. The rooms are simple but clean inside and you’ll have to share a bath with everyone else on the floor, but few people find this place and, when they do, they often pass it by because there is no staff on hand to greet you or even a reception desk. You pay for the rooms at the reception in the Hotel Carlos V. A single costs 17i. During the recent Semana Santa festivals, when the town was overrun with tourists and there was no hotel or hostel in town with a vacancy, this place was a life-saver.
